Food and initial size influence overwinter survival and condition of a juvenile marine fish (age-0 Atlantic cod)

چکیده

In subarctic Newfoundland, age-0 Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) settle into coastal habitats in several summer–autumn pulses, resulting broad length-frequency distributions before winter. Low winter temperatures and potential decreases food availability pose challenges for young-of-year fish. To examine how size variation affects overwintering success under contrasting scenarios, we conducted 114-day laboratory feeding trials at ambient overwinter sea temperatures, using demersal collected from Newman Sound, Newfoundland. We reared two classes of juvenile four daily ration levels (starvation, low, medium, high). used Fulton’s K condition factor to interpret effects fish on survival over showed that small amounts consumed (<1% BW·day ?1 ) maximized growth Newfoundland waters. With no food, dropped below 80% Day 47, whereas large juveniles remained >80% until 74. Therefore, expect higher earlier settlers increased size-selective mortality during either unproductive or protracted winters, when abundance is often low.

Overwinter Growth and Survival of Largemouth Bass: Interactions among Size, Food, Origin, and Winter Severity

—Winter severity (temperature, duration, and photocycle), geographic origin, food availability, and initial body size likely influence growth, survival, and, therefore, recruitment of age0 largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides. We collected age-0 largemouth bass (70–160 mm total length) from low (338N), intermediate (408N), and high (458N) latitudes throughout their natural range (origin), and ...

The Effect of Largemouth Bass Predation on Overwinter Survival of Two Size-Classes of Age-0 Bluegills

—Overwinter mortality is an important force structuring year-class strength of many fishes. Conventional wisdom is that overwinter mortality is primarily caused by starvation; however, recent research has demonstrated that piscivores continue to feed during winter and may also contribute to overwinter mortality of their prey populations. We conducted experiments in ten 0.04-ha earthen ponds in ...

Ice-age survival of Atlantic cod: agreement between palaeoecology models and genetics.

Scant scientific attention has been given to the abundance and distribution of marine biota in the face of the lower sea level, and steeper latitudinal gradient in climate, during the ice-age conditions that have dominated the past million years. Here we examine the glacial persistence of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) populations using two ecological-niche-models (ENM) and the first broad synthes...
